Pearls in Philippine History

⚪️The Pearl of Lao Tzu (1934), The Palawan Princess (2009), and The Pearl of Puerto Princesa (2016) are three of the world’s largest natural pearls, all discovered in the Philippines.

⚪️In his last poem, “Mi Ultimo Adios” (1896), Dr. Jose Rizal addressed the Philippines as the “Pearl of the Orient Seas”.
(Adios, Patria adorada, region del sol querida,
Perla del Mar de Oriente, nuestro perdido Eden!)

⚪️"Perlas ng Silanganan" was mentioned in the very first line of our national anthem, Lupang Hinirang.

⚪️The pinctada maxima oyster and south sea pearl are depicted on the reverse side of the Philippine New Generation Currency Series 1,000-peso bill.

⚪️President Fidel V. Ramos issued Proclamation No. 905 on October 15, 1996, declaring the Philippine Pearl, also known as the South Sea Pearl, as the National Gem of the Philippines.
